Beyond the Beautiful Views
How to Choose a Wedding Venue in Tuscany

There is something undeniably captivating about discovering a wedding venue in Tuscany. A centuries-old villa, a secluded estate surrounded by olive groves, a terrace overlooking the countryside. Sometimes, a single photograph is enough to make you imagine your wedding there.
But choosing a venue from thousands of miles away requires more than finding a beautiful setting.
Behind the architecture and picturesque landscapes are practical considerations that can shape your entire celebration, from guest accommodation and catering facilities to music restrictions and unexpected costs.
We explore what really matters when choosing a wedding venue in Tuscany with Elena and Fabrizio, the team behind Moon Weddings.
Beyond the First Impression
What should couples consider before they start looking for a venue?
Before anything else, we encourage couples to think about the experience they want to create.
Is the wedding a one-day celebration, or would they love to spend an entire weekend with their guests? Are they imagining an intimate dinner or a larger celebration with different moments and settings?
These decisions influence the type of property that makes sense.
A private villa may be perfect for a small gathering, while a larger estate could offer more flexibility for multiple events, guest accommodation and different spaces throughout the celebration.
The goal is not simply to find the most beautiful venue. It is to find the right setting for the wedding they actually want.
Are photographs enough to understand whether a venue is suitable?
Not always.
Photographs communicate atmosphere beautifully, but they don't necessarily explain how a property functions during an event.
We look at the actual spaces, their capacity and how guests will move between the ceremony, aperitivo, dinner and dancing.
A terrace may look spectacular but not comfortably accommodate a seated dinner. A garden might be ideal during the day but require additional lighting after sunset.
The setting matters, but so does the way everything comes together.
The Plan B Question
How important is having an indoor alternative?
Very important, especially when couples envision an outdoor ceremony or reception.
Even during the warmer months, the weather cannot be guaranteed.
We believe the alternative indoor space should feel just as intentional as the outdoor setting. It doesn't need to be identical, but it should still offer an atmosphere that feels right for the celebration.
Before booking, couples should understand exactly what spaces are available in case of rain, whether they can accommodate all their guests and whether additional arrangements would be necessary.
A Plan B shouldn't feel like an emergency solution. It should be part of the planning from the beginning.
What the Venue Price Doesn't Always Tell You
Can a venue that looks affordable become more expensive than expected?
Absolutely. This is one of the reasons why looking at the rental fee alone can be misleading.
Some properties have beautiful outdoor spaces but inadequate lighting for an evening reception. Others don't have professional kitchens suitable for catering, meaning a temporary kitchen may need to be installed.
There are also transportation costs to consider, particularly when the venue is far from the accommodation booked by guests.
These are not necessarily reasons to exclude a property. They are simply costs that need to be understood before making a decision.
Sometimes a venue with a higher initial rental price can offer better overall value because it already provides much of the infrastructure needed.
What about accommodation and minimum stays?
This is another important consideration for destination weddings.
Some Tuscan properties require a minimum stay of several nights, and in certain cases, the booking requirement can extend to an entire week.
That can work beautifully for couples planning a longer stay with family and friends, but it may not suit everyone.
It's important to clarify the accommodation conditions, how many people can stay on the property and whether alternative accommodation is available nearby.
The real question is whether the venue works for both the celebration and the way guests will experience their stay in Tuscany.
The Details Guests Rarely See
What logistical aspects do couples sometimes overlook?
Accessibility is a major one.
The Tuscan countryside is beautiful partly because of its secluded locations and narrow roads. But those same roads can make transportation more complicated.
We consider whether guest shuttles can reach the venue, whether vehicles have room to turn around and how suppliers will access the property for setup and deliveries.
Florists, caterers, musicians and technical teams need practical access to do their work.
These details might not be particularly romantic, but they make a significant difference to how smoothly the day unfolds.
And what should couples know about music restrictions?
It's essential to understand the rules before signing a contract.
Some venues have specific restrictions on outdoor music or the time celebrations must end. Others may offer indoor spaces where entertainment can continue later.
The conditions can depend on the property and applicable local regulations.
Couples should also check whether there are restrictions on external suppliers or requirements to work with particular professionals.
Knowing this early helps avoid disappointment, especially if music and dancing are important parts of the wedding experience.
Choosing with Confidence
If you could give couples one piece of advice before they book, what would it be?
Don't choose a venue based on photographs and rental price alone.
Understand what is included, what needs to be added, how the spaces will be used and whether the property fits the atmosphere and experience you want to create.
Every venue has its own characteristics, possibilities and limitations. The important thing is knowing them before making a commitment.
A beautiful wedding begins with a beautiful vision, but it also needs the right foundation.
